Your first clients usually need confidence that you can solve a specific visual problem. You do not need to claim years of experience or own the most expensive camera. You do need work examples, a clear offer and a reliable process.
Choose one starting offer
Instead of “I do all photography,” name a useful service: twenty edited product images for a small shop, a two-hour portrait session, or event coverage for a local organisation. Define what the client receives, the typical timeline, what is excluded and how changes are handled. You can broaden your services after you have proof.
Make a small, honest portfolio
Choose six to twelve strong images that resemble the work you want to book. Add brief context: the goal, your role, the constraints and the result you actually delivered. If you create self-initiated work, label it accurately. Ask before using client images in your portfolio, especially where people, private locations or confidential products appear.
Find prospects with a real need
Look for businesses, community groups and creators whose current images do not show their product or people clearly. Research before contacting them. A short message with a relevant observation and two examples is more useful than a mass template. Ask whether a specific shoot would be helpful; avoid pressure or exaggerated claims about revenue.
Set expectations early
- Ask what images are for, where they will appear and when they are needed.
- Agree on scope, fee, payment timing, cancellation and image usage in writing.
- Explain your approval and revision process.
- Keep copies of the brief, quote and final delivery record.
After delivery, ask for permission to show the work and request an honest testimonial if the client is satisfied. Follow up when you have a useful reason, not just to demand more work. Client acquisition takes time and depends on your skills, market and follow-through; no course or membership can guarantee paid work.
